The main thing I want you to remember about the application process for any law enforcement position is to KEEP A MASTER COPY OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION (your resume.) It is critical to be consistent throughout the hiring process, especially when you get to the polygraph which may be months after you first apply.

 

Furthermore, I recommend that you apply to multiple agencies - don't put all of your eggs in one basket. There are a limited number of openings for hundreds of applicants, so even if you are fully qualified, you may not get selected when you want to.

 

For the Border Patrol, go to USAJOBS. This is a large job database used for all Federal jobs in the U.S. so you need to be sure you are focused on the correct job title - "Border Patrol Agent." There are many other job titles within the Department of Homelad Security.

 

I recommend that you create a new user account for yourself. This way, you can set a notification alert for the job of "Border Patrol Agent." Once you have your account setup, do a simple search on the keyword "Border Patrol Agent." Other search words are not improtant at this point. If there are current openings, they will be listed next.

 

Review the entire vacancy announcement for important information about who may apply, job qualifications, duties, position requirements, salary, and duty location. Use this information to decide if your interests, education, and experience are a right match for the job. Be sure to take note of the HR Contact listed on the vacancy announcement. If you should have any questions during or after the vacancy open period, you will need to have this contact information.
 

Carefully follow the specific instructions provided in the “How to Apply” section of the vacancy announcement. Be sure to submit all required documents requested in the vacancy announcement to receive full consideration. Review your resume and/or transcripts.  Ensure the work experience on your resume clearly documents your experience as it relates to this announcement/position.
